PICO Genesis Is The Latest Buzzword In Skincare And Here’s Everything You Need To Know About It
Bazaar: We spoke to Dubai’s skincare guru Rebecca Treston to get the low-down
First thing’s first, what is PICO Genesis?
PICO Genesis is a game-changing skin revitalization laser treatment that gives you a more radiant, brighter, and uniform skin complexion in just 20-minutes. The procedure takes an entirely new approach to the treatment of pigmentation issues and skin revitalisation for all skin types and lesion, whether it is freckles, melasma etc. It combines the benefits of three highly-effective wavelengths in ultra-short pulses to cause an intense, non-thermal, photo mechanical disruption and remodelling of the upper dermis. It also destroys the pigment, leaving your skin clearer and giving you a more even, uniform complexion.
In essence, PICO Genesis will take skin to that next level. You know how you see those seemingly flawless faces on Instagram and wish your skin looked like that? That’s what it’s like, no filter needed. It will give your overall complexion a glow and vibrancy that you have been striving for but probably unable to achieve before now.

How is this different to other laser facial treatments?
Pigment particles are small and dense, which makes them difficult to remove. They are also very susceptible to heat – a trait that made previous types of lasers risky treatment methods. The PICO Genesis laser procedure uses a non-thermal laser, which means because there is no heat, it doesn’t cause damage to the surrounding tissue. Instead it shatters the pigment, enabling your body to get rid of it and leaving your skin clearer to give you a more even, uniform complexion.
Also, with some high-intensity laser treatments, as many as 10 to 15 sessions are required to see results. With PICO Genesis, you will see results in much fewer sessions. You may need just one or two, or if you have severe pigmentation, you may need up to five treatments to see results. Treatments should be spaced two weeks apart.
Finally, in most cases with PICO, there is no downtime! For some people, however, there may be some slight flaking or swelling with the procedure for three to five days after, but these mild side effects can be covered with makeup.
For best results, what other combined treatments do you recommend to have in tandem?
It’s a great treatment on its own – you can do Pico Genesis for pigmentation. Fractionated PICO Genesis is for people who need a more intensive treatment – those who have fine lines, prominent sun damage. Both of those treatments will also remodel collagen so they are comprehensive on their own. However, if I have a patient who comes in and needs some lifting, then I prefer to do Ulthera as a first step so that I can treat from the skin’s foundations, finishing with some Pico so they can have improved texture, tone and clarity of the skin.
What results have you personally had – do you love it?
When I came back from my vacation, everyone (and I mean everyone – from those in work to the hair salon I visit!) was saying how tired I looked, how stressful the vacation must have been and so on – actually to the point of rudeness!
One day, I had enough. The next day I made room in my schedule and had the PICO Genesis. The difference in people’s comments about my skin was like night and day. People were complimenting me, telling me how fabulous I looked, saying they wanted skin like mine. I have had the same sort of results from my patients. I often get What’s APP messages from them telling me what a difference the treatment has made to their skin, how much better they feel they look and how much they love the compliments they are getting. The feedback has been overwhelming!
